How we use the funds

Welcome Packs

One of the main requests by the nurses was a few essentials to be given to parents upon their baby’s arrival on the unit. The packs include a pack of micro nappies; a pack of bibs in pink/blue; a fleece blanket in pink/blue; and information about the charity and what is available.

Not only do these packs provide the essentials, but the nurses also say it is a positive thing to be able to give something to families to welcome them onto the unit.

Hardship Fund

The charity provides emergency funds, where necessary, for those who are in need due to their baby being on the unit.

King & Miller Vouchers

The charity provides a £10 meal voucher for families who have been on the unit for a period of time.  This helps them just to have a break from the close confines of the unit and to have a bit of time for themselves.

Stagecoach Bus Tokens

The charity provides bus tokens to families that are struggling with transport to the hospital.

Parent Library

A selection of relevant books  has been purchased by the charity and placed into the Parent Room on the neonatal unit.

These range from specific books about being a parent to a baby on a neonatal unit, to celebrities who have written about their pregnancies and experiences.

Cinema Vouchers

The charity has recently started providing families with £10 vouchers for the Odeon Cinema in Mansfield.

The intention with these is that if there are any siblings of baby’s on the unit, it gives an opportunity for the parents to treat them when a lot of the attention is on their baby brother/sister.

Staff Training

The charity funds places on training courses / conferences that the NHS is unable to fund.

Amongst other things, last year the charity funded 2 places on the national neonatal conference.  The feedback from the nurses was excellent and valuable information and knowledge was taken back to the unit.

The charity is currently working with the Infant Feeding Nurse at the hospital to help fund a Consultant Paediatrician and Senior Nurse to visit a world leading Neonatal unit in Uppsala, Sweden.  This is to look at the benefits of kangaroo Maternal Care and the way that it is incorporated into every aspect of baby care on their neonatal unit.

Staff Library

The charity has undertaken to completely update the reference books for the staff on the unit and pay for a subscription to a relevant journal to ensure that staff are up to date with the latest issues in neonatal care.

The Practice Development Nurse is currently researching a list of relevant publications.
